Why do historians — and commentators — sometimes leave out key facts?

I would very much value your thoughts on this matter

Lately, I have listened to several podcasts discussing the fate of the Princes in the Tower. As ever, a number of familiar theories are repeated — that the boys escaped, fled to Europe, and later returned as Lambert Simnel or Perkin Warbeck.

But where, I ask, is the actual proof?

Beyond speculation, what firm evidence supports these claims?

These theories do give the writers book sales, but where are the facts?

At the same time, we have documented material — facts preserved in wills — that are too often set aside in favour of a more convenient or compelling narrative.

Professor Tim Thornton has identified evidence that a chain of office belonging to Edward V was passed down through the family of Sir James Tyrell’s sister-in-law, recorded clearly in her will. One must ask: if Edward V had truly escaped to Europe, would he have left behind the very item that symbolised his birthright?

It seems unlikely.

And when we consider that many sources point to Sir James Tyrell as a central figure in the fate of the princes, the presence of such an item within his extended family raises serious and important questions.

Any good detective would recognise this as a chain of evidence worthy of careful consideration.

So why, then, is it so often overlooked?

Let me be clear: in my book Murder in the Tower ( Out September 2026)

I do not place blame at the feet of Richard III.

And, ultimately, the only way to move beyond speculation and establish what truly happened is through evidence. That is why I am calling for DNA testing of the remains in Westminster Abbey.
