Who Were the Princes in the Tower?
Few mysteries in English history have captured the public imagination quite like that of the Princes in the Tower.
The two boys at the centre of the mystery were Edward V and his younger brother Richard, Duke of York. They were the sons of King Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville.
When Edward IV died unexpectedly in April 1483, twelve-year-old Edward became King Edward V. His uncle, Richard, Duke of Gloucester, was appointed Lord Protector until the young king came of age.
As Edward travelled towards London for his coronation, political events moved rapidly. Richard arrested several of the Woodville family and took control of the Privy Council.. Edward was lodged in the Tower of London, then a royal residence commonly used by monarchs before their coronation.
A few weeks later, his younger brother Richard ,whom it is likely he had never meet, joined him there.
The boys were seen less and less frequently until they disappeared altogether.
What happened to them remains one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in British history.
Were they murdered?
Did they die of natural causes?
Were they smuggled to safety?
Or does the answer lie somewhere else entirely?
More than five centuries later, we still do not know.
Tomorrow, I shall explain why this mystery matters far beyond simple historical curiosity.
If you believe we should use modern science to discover the truth, please support my petition calling for DNA testing of the remains believed to be those of the Princes in the Tower.
