When a Daughter Refused to Let History Forget

17th March 2026 by | Uncategorized

In the summer of 1535 the severed head of Sir Thomas More was placed upon London Bridge.

It was meant as a warning.

Those who defied the will of Henry VIII would meet the same fate.

For weeks the head remained there, high above the Thames, displayed among the other victims of Tudor justice.

Yet the authorities had not reckoned with the devotion of More’s daughter.

Margaret (Meg) Roper could not bear the thought that her father’s remains should be left exposed to the wind and rain, feasted on by birds and insects a spectacle for passers-by.

According to tradition, she bribed the keeper of the bridge and quietly recovered the head, ensuring it safe within the Roper family vault at St Dunstan’s Church Kent

Nearly five centuries later, that skull still to rests there.

It is a small, deeply human story within the vast drama of the Tudor court — a daughter’s love overcoming the brutality of power.

And it reminds us that history is not only made of kings and politics.

Sometimes it is made of loyalty, love, courage, and the quiet determination of those who refuse to let the past be forgotten.
