Thomas More’s Skull: The Signs Are Still There

In the search for the past, the signs remain — if one knows where to look.

In Canterbury, opposite St Dunstan’s Church, the skull of Thomas More still rests within a lead casket. It has endured there for centuries, preserved not by chance, but by devotion.

Margaret Roper — More’s beloved daughter — ensured that part of her father would remain close. Through her marriage into the Roper family, his relic was placed within their vault, which still lies within the church today.

The image shown here captures the old gateway to the Ropers’ once vast home in Kent — a quiet but enduring witness to that history.

Now, nearly five hundred years on, there is the possibility that More’s skull may be raised from the vault and brought into the main body of the church.

A moment that would coincide with the quincentenary of his execution.

The past is not lost. It remains, waiting — and, perhaps, ready to be seen once more.
