Meet the characters in My novel The Wolf of Whitehall

Sir Rafe Sadler

Not all power at the Tudor court was held in the open.

Some of it moved more quietly — through observation, judgement, and the careful reading of those who stood at its centre. It is here that Ralph Sadler made his place.

He was not born to prominence, yet through service and ability he rose to become one of the most trusted men in the circle of Thomas Cromwell. In Cromwell’s world, trust was not lightly given, and rarely without reason.

Sadler’s strength lay not in dominance, but in understanding.

He observed.
He listened.
He endured.

In a court defined by ambition and sudden change, he navigated its shifting ground with care, serving through the reigns that followed Cromwell’s fall and adapting where others did not survive.

He was present at moments of consequence, yet seldom at their centre — a position that allowed him to see clearly, and to act with restraint.

It is perhaps for this reason that he endured where so many others did not.

Sir Rafe Sadler is not always counted among the great figures of the Tudor age.

Yet his story offers something different.

Not the rise of power.
But the art of surviving it.
