Jane the Fool

Jane the Fool — sometimes written Jane Foole — served in the Tudor court, first with Princess Mary and later with Queen Catherine Parr. One of the very few recorded women in her role, she moved between chapel, privy lodgings, and great hall with a quiet smile and a quick eye.

Historians often class Jane as a ‘natural fool’ (a period term suggesting a learning disability), which helps explain why wardrobe and care accounts mention her head being shaved and her being supplied with distinctive gowns; she and Will Sommers sometimes appeared in matching outfits.

In our story, she is a watcher at the edge of the pageant, brave in her own way — proof that truth can travel safely when it is wrapped in jest.
