📍 Mannington Hall, Norfolk

Nestled in the beautiful Norfolk countryside, Mannington Hall is one of England’s finest surviving moated medieval manor houses. Built in the 15th century and still privately owned today, it has remained a remarkable example of Norfolk’s architectural and historical heritage for more than 500 years.

📜 Why it matters

Unlike many great houses that passed into public ownership, Mannington Hall has remained in private hands throughout much of its history. Surrounded by its medieval moat and beautiful gardens, it offers a rare glimpse into the life of a Tudor country estate and the families who shaped Norfolk’s past.

👑 Tudor connection

During the Tudor period, Mannington Hall was home to the Walpole family, an influential Norfolk dynasty whose fortunes rose under the Tudor monarchs. The Hall would have witnessed the sweeping political and religious changes of the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I, standing quietly through one of the most dramatic centuries in English history.

📖 Did you know?

Mannington Hall is one of the very few moated manor houses in Norfolk that remains both privately owned and occupied by the same family line. Its magnificent gardens, medieval moat and Tudor architecture continue to attract visitors from across Britain.

Mannington Hall reminds us that Britain’s history is not found only in royal palaces and great castles, but also in the country houses where generations of families quietly witnessed the making of our nation’s story.

Discovering Britain’s past, one story at a time.
