Catherine Howard & Thomas Culpeper

Many authors are quick to dismiss Catherine Howard as little more than a ‘good-time girl’. But viewed through a more modern lens, is that fair?

She was around sixteen — young, impressionable, and shaped by the will of powerful men, not least her uncle, Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk. Was she truly reckless… or was she, in truth, groomed?

What we do know is this: she was a girl, inexperienced and vulnerable, married to a king more than three decades her senior — Henry VIII — a man by then in visible physical decline.

Perhaps there is another side to her story.

And perhaps we should ask: was it ever just to condemn a girl to the scaffold?

Read The Reflection in the Mirror — and discover Catherine Howard anew.
