Blickling Hall, Norfolk
Few places in England are so closely associated with one of the most fascinating figures in Tudor history as Blickling Hall.
Although the magnificent Jacobean house we see today was built later, it stands on the site of the former Boleyn family home. Tradition holds that Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII and mother of Queen Elizabeth I, was born here around 1501. Whilst historians continue to debate whether Anne was born at Blickling or Hever Castle in Kent, there is no doubt that the estate played an important role in the story of one of England’s most influential families.
Lady Jane (Parker) Rochford wife of George Boleyn, was born here.
Following Anne’s execution in 1536, legends began to surround Blickling. The most famous tells of Anne Boleyn’s ghost returning each year on the anniversary of her execution, arriving in a phantom carriage pulled by headless horses before disappearing into the darkness. Whether fact or folklore, the story has become one of Norfolk’s best-known ghostly tales.
Today, Blickling Hall is one of Norfolk’s finest country estates, surrounded by beautiful gardens, ancient woodland and peaceful parkland. Visitors can explore the magnificent house, discover its remarkable library, and enjoy one of the county’s most treasured historic landscapes.
