Before the court Thomas Cromwell

Before the black velvet, the royal council and the dangerous business of serving Henry VIII, Thomas Cromwell had known a very different world. He grew up in Putney, where his father, Walter, worked as a blacksmith, brewer and businessman. Court records reveal a father frequently in trouble with the law, although they tell us much less about the private life within that household. As a young man, Thomas left England. Accounts of his early travels contain gaps, but he is associated with military service in Italy, employment among Florentine merchants and the cloth trade of the Low Countries. Imagine the education those years offered: unfamiliar languages, money changing hands, bargains struck between strangers, and survival depending upon judgement rather than a grand family name. To my mind, those experiences help explain the man who returned to England and built a career in commerce and law.

He had encountered worlds far beyond the English court. When I write Cromwell, I keep that travelled young man in mind—the outsider who had learned to observe, adapt and make himself useful.
