Henry’s Queens
Where Henry VIII’s six queens are buried:
Where all the Six Queens are to be found now:
· Katherine of Aragon — Peterborough Cathedral (d. 1536). Her tomb is honoured annually with ‘Katherine Queen of England’ tributes. (Note: her and Henry’s infant son, Henry, Duke of Cornwall (1511), was interred at Westminster Abbey, not Peterborough.)There is no marker or plate where they assume he is buried.
· Anne Boleyn — Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula, Tower of London (executed 1536). Laid to rest in an elm ‘arrow chest’; with her head by her feet as the box was too short .This was identified during the 1876 restorations and now marked by a ledger stone. The yeoman, lay a red poppy on her stone, as so many people ask where she is buried.
· Jane Seymour — St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle (d. 1537). Buried with Henry VIII.
· Anne of Cleves — Westminster Abbey, south side of the High Altar (d. 1557), burial ordered by Mary I.
· Catherine Howard — Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula, Tower of London (executed 1542).
· Catherine Parr — Sudeley Castle, Gloucestershire, St Mary’s Chapel (d. 1548), the only queen consort buried in a private castle chapel.
