Crown Jewels Attempted Thief at The Tower of London 1671

Today we remember one of the boldest heists in royal history — the audacious attempt by Thomas Blood (often dubbed “Captain Blood”) to seize the English crown jewels. The date: 9 May 1671. The place: The Tower of London, under the quiet night burdened with ambition and glittering gold. HISTORY CHANNEL ITALIA+2British Heritage+2

Dressed as a parson, Blood and his conspirators ingratiated themselves with the Keeper of the Jewels, then struck swiftly — mallet blows echoing, precious stones sliding, the Orb stuffed into a trousers’ pocket, the sceptre sawed in two. He fled into the night with his prizes and his audacity still intact. Wikipedia+1

And yet, as we reflect on this crime of glory, we cannot ignore a modern parallel: the recent heist at the Musée du Louvre (October 2025), where thieves disguised as workers mounted a hoist to snatch French crown jewels from the Galerie d’Apollon in minutes. Wikipedia

Two robberies, centuries apart: royal regalia targeted, national pride wounded, myth intertwined with crime. They both remind us that jewels are not merely wealth — they are emblems of power, legitimacy, history.
