Meet the Characters – From my novel The Reflection in the Mirror
Christina of Denmark (1521–1590) was one of the most remarkable women of her age. Widowed young as Duchess of Milan, she became a political prize in Europe’s dynastic marriage games.
In 1538, Hans Holbein painted her portrait when Henry VIII considered her as his next wife. Christina was admired for her beauty, poise, and intelligence, but it was her sharp wit that ensured her survival. When the prospect of marrying Henry was raised, she famously remarked:
‘If I had two heads, one should be at the King of England’s disposal.’
With that remark, she neatly avoided becoming his fifth unfortunate queen. Later she married Francis, Duke of Lorraine, and played an active role in European diplomacy.
Christina’s legacy endures in Holbein’s celebrated portrait — a striking image of a young widow who used humour, intelligence, and dignity to navigate the perilous politics of her time.
