Few castles in England possess such an extraordinary story as Castle Rising.
Built nearly 900 years ago, this magnificent Norman fortress later became the home of Queen Isabella, one of the most controversial women in medieval history. Following the deposition of her husband, Edward II, she spent many years here in Norfolk, surrounded by the walls that still stand today.
Why it matters
Castle Rising reminds us that history is not simply about battles. It is also about power, loyalty and the remarkable women who shaped Britain’s past.
Tudor connection
Although built long before the Tudors, castles such as this formed part of the political landscape inherited by the Tudor monarchs. The struggles between medieval kings and queens ultimately paved the way for the dynasty that would follow.
