Princes in the Tower Campaign for DNA testing
Why Does It Matter?
A question I am often asked is this:
‘Why does it matter what happened to two boys who disappeared more than 500 years ago?’
The answer is simple.
History matters because truth matters.
The disappearance of Edward V and Richard, Duke of York, changed the course of English history. If they were murdered, then one of the greatest crimes in our nation’s history remains unresolved.
If they died from illness or other causes, then generations may have wrongly accused individuals of a crime they did not commit.
For centuries, historians have debated the responsibility of Richard III. Others have suggested Henry VII. Sir Thomas More blames Sir James Tyrell: Recent research by Professor Tim Thornton has strengthened the case that More had access to genuine information about Tyrell, Forest and Dighton through people he knew at Henry VIII’s court.
Some have proposed alternative theories entirely.
Yet all these arguments have one thing in common.
They are based largely upon interpretation, opinion, and incomplete evidence.
Today we possess scientific techniques that historians of previous generations could only dream about.
DNA analysis, isotope testing, forensic examination, and advanced imaging can help answer questions that have remained unresolved since the fifteenth century.
This is not about proving one historian right and another wrong.
It is about establishing the facts.
If the remains discovered in 1674 are not those of the Princes, we should know.
If they are, we should know that too.
History deserves evidence, not endless speculation.
