Edward VI

The reign of Edward VI began in youth, and was shaped by it.

The only legitimate son of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour, Edward came to the throne in 1547 at just nine years of age. His accession was not merely the continuation of a dynasty, but the fulfilment of long-held expectation — the long-awaited male heir.

Yet the reality of his rule would be very different.

Power did not rest in the hands of the young king, but with those around him — most notably his uncle, Edward Seymour, and later John Dudley. It was through them that the direction of the realm was guided, and through them that the course of Edward’s reign was largely determined.

Even so, Edward was not without influence.

He was intelligent, devout, and deeply committed to the Protestant faith. Under his reign, England moved more decisively in that direction, shaping a religious landscape that would leave a lasting mark on the country’s future.

His rule was brief.

He died in 1553 at the age of fifteen.

Yet in those few years, the foundations of significant change were laid — changes that would echo through the reigns that followed, and through the wider story of the Tudors.

Edward VI is often remembered as a boy king.

But his reign, though short, was one of consequence.
