Suleiman I (1494–1566), known in the West as Suleiman the Magnificent and in the East as Kanuni (“the Lawgiver”), ruled the Ottoman Empire at the height of its power.
Crowned in 1520, he expanded Ottoman territories deep into Europe, conquering Belgrade, Rhodes, and Hungary, and laying siege to Vienna. At sea, his admirals dominated the Mediterranean, Red Sea, and Persian Gulf.
Yet Suleiman was more than a conqueror. He reformed Ottoman law, sponsored monumental architecture such as the great Süleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul, and fostered a golden age of poetry, art, and culture.
His personal life also reshaped Ottoman tradition. His marriage to Hurrem Sultan (Roxelana), a former concubine, was unprecedented and made her one of the most influential women in Ottoman history.
Suleiman remains a figure of splendour and power, remembered as a statesman, warrior, and patron of civilisation — the very embodiment of the Ottoman golden age.
