Before the court Rafe Sadler

Before he became Sir Ralph Sadler, royal secretary and diplomat, Rafe was a little boy sent into another man’s household to learn. Born in Hackney in 1507, he was about seven when he entered the household of Thomas Cromwell. His father, Henry Sadler, worked as a minor official; this placement offered his son an education and opportunities that could shape his entire future. Cromwell was still building his own career. Rafe therefore grew up alongside that rise, receiving an education and eventually becoming a trusted member of his service. The household was his introduction to a world of letters, business, powerful connections and delicate negotiations.

When I write Rafe, I think about those beginnings. What did it mean to spend so much of your childhood beneath the roof of the man who would become the king’s chief minister? How deeply would gratitude, affection and loyalty become entwined? That is part of what draws me to him: behind the accomplished courtier was the boy who had once arrived to learn. For those who came to love Rafe through Wolf Hall, his journey continues in my Tudor saga, beginning with The Reflection in the Mirror. www.murderinthetower.london
